Basic white rice sounds like such a simple thing, yet so many home cooks seem perplexed on how to achieve the perfect pot of white rice.  You don’t need to spend money on expensive rice cookers; all you need is a sauce pan with a tight lid.

In a medium sauce pan:

1 ¾ cup water
½ teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup white rice (jasmine or other long grain rice)

Bring water and salt to a boil in a medium sauce pan.  Stir the rice into the water to break up any clumps.  Reduce heat to medium low, cover pot, and set the timer to 10 minutes.  Do not be tempted to check the rice by picking up the lid.  Perfect rice is cooked by both a boiling and steaming method.  Once the timer goes off, turn the heat off of the stove and leave the pot on the burner for a minimum of 10 minutes to finish steaming.  Fluff with a fork to finish.  This method also works well with flavored rice you may purchase from the store such as Uncle Ben’s Wild Rice and Rice a Roni.
